Spanish or Castilian is a romance language derived from Latin, belonging to the Indo-European language family. Spanish began to be taught shortly after new territories were incorporated into the crown of Castile, a medieval kingdom on the Iberian Peninsula. In 1492 Castilian or Spanish was the official language of this kingdom.
